Go Hygge, and Find Your Cozy. They say home is where the heart is, and nobody knows that better than the Danes. Have you heard of hygge? If you’ve curled up on your coziest couch with a cup of cocoa this cold winter, you’ve experienced hygge without even knowing it; if not, it’s never too late.
Pronounced hoo-ga, this Danish concept — dating back to the early 1800s — “encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life,” according to Country Living, and “this national obsession with all things cozy is credited as one of the reasons why Denmark is always at the top of the list of the world's happiest countries, despite their infamously miserable winters.”
So, what qualifies as hygge?
According to Country Living, they’ll tell you:
- Candles (try Candlestock in Woodstock, NY)
- Fireplaces (try Fireside Warmth in Kingston, NY)
- Throw blankets (try Lounge Home Furnishings in High Falls, NY)
- Homemade sweats (try Lagusta’s Luscious in New Paltz, NY)
- Hot drinks (try The Dutch Ale House in Saugerties, NY, or go to any Bread Alone in the area)
- Comfort foods (try PAKT in Kingston, NY)
While the Danes practice the lifestyle all year long, and its worldwide popularity (it’s been tagged four-million times on Instagram to date) suggests there’s good reason to do so, “winter is the obvious time for all things hygge.”
So, if you can’t seem to Find Your Cozy this winter season, and new furnishings just won’t do it, you might want to house hunt right here in the Hudson Valley/Catskills — an international travel award-winning region in Upstate New York known for its romantic getaways, snow-covered trails, family-friendly farmhouses, chic country cottages and other hyggelig (hygge-like) homes and attractions.
Let’s face it: there’s nothing more hygge than going with the flow, and sometimes finding new surroundings is a necessity. Fortunately, as Your Local Guide to New Paltz and the surrounding area, that’s my specialty.
