A few weeks ago I traveled to Mona, UT to visit the iconic Young Living Lavender Farm and Distillery. I wish everyone could experience the intoxicating aroma of lavender and chamomile during harvest time! I’ll never forget it and I plan on going back every summer for the yearly YL convention -- Disneyland for oilers!
We all know how a scent can trigger emotional responses like childhood memories triggered by the smell of homemade chocolate chip cookies, or thinking of your best friend when you get a whiff of her favorite perfume. Incoming smells start inside the nose and run along the bottom of the brain; this may be why olfaction, more than any other sense, is so successful at triggering emotions and memories. Scents also affect one’s mood. I am forever grateful that lavender will be the scent that reminds me of my wonderful time in Utah and that my go-to oils serve to enhance my daily mood. A little bit of lavender oil and I feel stress-free and calm, a whiff of rosemary oil inspires clarity and a mix of grapefruit and geranium and I feel joy. Who knew that happiness could be right under my nose!
While in Utah, I had the opportunity to talk with the lead Young Living farmer (also an agronomist) and learned of his dedication and (heart) for the soil, seeds (every seed and plant that is planted by hand–yes, thousands!), and timing (the science of knowing the precise time to distill for optimum benefits of each oil) resulting in producing the purest oil on the planet. Oh my! How lucky we are.
The uses of lavender are endless - sleepy slumbers, beautiful skin, and lovely locks are just the beginning. Lavender lemonade IS summer! A few drops of lavender essential oil in a pitcher of organic lemonade, and maybe a spritz or spike - time to kick back and enjoy another long, warm day.
Here’s a fab recipe: Lavender Lemonade
- 6 organic lemons, juiced
- 1 lime, juiced or a few drops of Lime Vitality (from the rind and less acidic!)
- 1/2 cup raw honey
- 2 - 4 drops Lavender Vitality essential oil
- Ice water, about 10 cups
- Lavender sprigs, optional
- Combine lemon juice, lime juice, honey, and Lavender Vitality in a large glass pitcher.
- Add water to taste.
- Stir until well mixed.
- Garnish with sprigs of lavender.
Summer Tip: Lavender’s best friend is peppermint. There is nothing like a chilled spray bottle of water + a few drops of each to refresh your skin at the beach or pool-side.
